Monte Carlo modeling of drum milling of staple fiber canvas and applications of ground basalt or glass fibers

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This work systematically investigated the fiber grinding process in extruders and drum mills, developed a simple mathematical model describing fiber grinding in drum mills, and employed Monte Carlo simulations to analyze this process. The study established that the length distribution of ground fibers followed a specific law, which is a special case of the well-known beta distribution in mathematical statistics. Ground staple fibers were classified based on the average diameter of monofilaments derived from raw materials, and the feasibility of using fibers with different aspect ratios was examined, demonstrating that finer fibers offer significant advantages over larger-diameter ones. Additionally, applications of ground, basalt, super-thin fibers - referred to as basalt microfibers - in composite product manufacturing were presented. Finally, a one-stage method for converting basalt waste from the mining and ore industry into commercial basalt glass products was proposed.
