Left Ventricular Diastolic Collapse in a Multiloculated Malignant Pericardial Effusion
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Cardiac tamponade results from the accumulation of pericardial fluid that increases intrapericardial pressure leading to compression of cardiac chambers, impairment of diastolic filling, and reduction of cardiac output. Classic echocardiographic findings of tamponade due to a circumferential pericardial effusion (PEff) include right atrial and right ventricular collapse as the lower filling pressures in these chambers make them more vulnerable to compression. However, the presence of pericardial adhesions and localized PEffs can cause regional cardiac tamponade, characterized by focal chamber compression.
