Abstract: Vehicle platoon is an effective way to save energy and improve traffic efficiency by keeping a smaller distance between multiple vehicles. Due to the significant increase of axle load on traffic structure in the case of platoon, it is imperative to investigate the vertical dynamic characteristics of vehicles under platooning conditions. This paper establishes a multi-vehicle-bridge coupling dynamic model, accounting for asphalt pavement properties on bridge decks and the viscoelastic and geometrically nonlinear characteristics of bridge materials, and vehicle jump phenomena in the platoon. Newmark-β and FPEI4-4 (Four-stage, four-order, parameter freezing precise exponential integrator) numerical integration schemes were used to solve multi-type vehicle platoon-bridge coupling vibration characteristics under different vehicle speed and vehicle following distance and different platooning forms. The model established in this paper can be used to study the problem of any number of vehicle platoons in which each vehicle has different vehicle parameters. The numerical results show that the application of FPEI4-4 numerical integration scheme can improve the response solving efficiency of long-platoon and bridge coupling system by tens of times while meeting the accuracy requirements. When two types of vehicles with different loads form a platoon to cross the bridge, the vibration response caused by the interleaved platoon method is relatively small, which can reduce the peak dynamic response of the bridge by about 20%; Platoon speed significantly influences vertical vehicle vibrations during crossing, and platoon speed should avoid all the resonance speeds induced by individual vehicle models within the platoon.
