Two coupled right circularly polarized laser for pulse compression in magnetized plasma for exawatt lasers

Abstract: The generation of ultra-intense, short-duration laser pulses is fundamental to advancing high-field physics, but conventional compression methods are limited by material damage thresholds. Here, we present a new robust and efficient plasma-based method for laser self-compression that overcomes this barrier by co-propagating a Gaussian laser pulse through a magnetized plasma. Our model exploits the balance between a dispersion-induced frequency chirp and relativistic-ponderomotive non-linearity, which is amplified by an axial magnetic field. We demonstrate through numerical simulations that this mechanism produces highly compressed, short pulses with intensities over 350 times greater than the incident pulse. This magnetic-field-mediated compression offers a versatile, damage-resistant platform for generating exawatt-class lasers and beyond, a critical step for extreme laser science.
