Signals Ahead: Balancing Cancer Detection Innovation and Evidence

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Multi-cancer early detection (MCED, pronounced em-said) tests are an emerging class of liquid biopsies designed to detect multiple cancers from a single blood or body fluid sample. Most commercially available MCEDs analyze circulating tumor DNA, cell-free DNA methylation patterns, or protein biomarkers using next-generation sequencing and machine learning. The tests often leverage large-scale data and pattern recognition algorithms and models to interpret molecular signals as an early biologic indication of cancer development (National Cancer Institute, n.d.).
