Abstract: Multiple cold pools are observed to pass over the same location on the same day without colliding, a feature we refer to as a cold pool train. We conduct a suite of idealized numerical simulations of a cold pool train to quantify how cold pool propagation speed and head depth are affected by prior cold pools. We find that the second cold pool (CP2)’s propagation speed increases compared to the same cold pool propagating through an unaltered environment because the first cold pool (CP1) alters both the wind and stability profiles in CP2’s environment. We quantify the individual contributions to the increase in CP2 propagation speed by CP1-induced changes to the wind profile and static stability and find that the altered wind profile effect is generally more important. The train-induced changes in cold pool depth do not show consistent trends with changing cold pool properties or timing.
