Effects of Shading Net Types on Light Quality, Growth and Flowering Characteristics of ‘Sulhyang’ Strawberry plantlets
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study investigated the effects of shading materials on the production of high-quality strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.cv.'Sulhyang') plantlets and flower bud differentiation during the high-temperature summer season in a South Korean greenhouse.Black and white shading films were applied over 4 months, and the internal light environment, temperature, growth, and flowering characteristics were compared. The black shading film reduced greenhouse temperatures more effectively, but the white shading film increased photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) by 91% and altered the light spectrum, reducing blue wavelengths and enhancing red wavelengths.Compared to the black shading film, the white shading film produced shorter plants but higher fresh and dry weights of root parts, 13% larger crown diameters, and a 47% higher flower bud differentiation rate. These results indicate that white shading nets improve the light environment, promoting high-quality nursery production and early flowering. This approach could enhance commercial strawberry production by enabling earlier harvests and increasing farmer profitability.
