A new bi-objective model for resource-constrained project scheduling and cash flow problems with financial constraints under uncertainty: a case study

Type: article
Abstract: Project cash flow, comprising all cash inflows and outflows, is vital to a firm’s economic survival. Therefore, effectively integrating cash flow considerations into resource-constrained project scheduling is crucial. Moreover, since effective project management is subject to inherent uncertainties, assessing their profound impact is essential. This paper presents a new comprehensive multi-mode, multi-objective linear programming model in an uncertain environment. The model has two conflicting objectives: (1) maximizing final cash flow (profit) and (2) minimizing project duration. The model incorporates different practical assumptions, including payments delays, project finance constraints, initial capital, different types of interest rates, credit limit to mitigate financial distress, and credit line usage. As the model is multi-objective with uncertain parameters, a new extended interval valued fuzzy - Torabi and Hassini (IVF-TH) approach is proposed to solve it. The presented MILP model is solved applying the CPLEX solver. In addition, a real construction project from the oil and gas industry serves as a case study to demonstrate the model’s applicability. Ultimately, a sensitivity analysis is conducted, and the performance of the proposed solution approach is compared with previous multi-objective optimization methods using both the case study and large problem instances to assess the outcomes.
