Particulate matter increases bone morphogenetic protein 2 in lung fibroblasts

Type: article
Abstract: Particulate matter <2.5 µm (PM 2.5 ) from air pollution contributes to many different lung diseases, but the mechanisms are not fully understood. Here, we demonstrated that PM 2.5 caused an upregulation of bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2) in lung fibroblasts. BMP2 can promote myofibroblast differentiation or inhibit collagen expression, depending on the context, and can be a means by which PM 2.5 contributes to fibrotic and nonfibrotic lung diseases.
