Couroupita guianensis seed oil as novel feedstock for the production of biodiesel via microwave assisted transesterification optimized by response surface methodology
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study investigates the use of Couroupita guianensis seed oil (CGSO), a novel non-edible feedstock, for biodiesel production through an intensified microwave-assisted transesterification process, aiming to enhance reaction efficiency and yield. The reaction parameters such as oil: methanol proportion, catalyst concentration, reaction time and stirring speed were optimized through response surface methodology a statistical tool capable of analyzing the interactive effects of various process parameters on biodiesel yield and quality. A quadratic response surface regression model was employed to predict biodiesel yield. The model suggested an optimum condition of oil to methanol proportion 55 % (v/v) reaction time 6 minutes, stirring speed 400 rpm and catalyst concentration 1.0 % (w/w). The experiments were carried out with suggested optimum conditions which yield 95.15 % of biodiesel which is in close agreement with predicted value. The fuel properties of the CGSOME ( Couroupita guianensis seed oil methyl ester) has Cetane number of 60 which is higher compared to reported biodiesels other fuel properties like Higher Heating Value, Oxidative stability, Cloud point and Pour point are determined and meet specification of ASTM D6751 and EN 14214 standards. Overall microwave assisted transesterification stands out as an effective and energy efficient method for enhancing biodiesel yield and achieving superior biodiesel quality, showcasing a significant reduction in the reaction time and energy consumption.
