An analytics-based model for securing the healthcare drug distribution network with blockchain

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The proliferation of counterfeit drugs and vaccines in Indonesia constitutes a significant public health threat, undermining treatment efficacy and compromising patient safety. Despite ongoing efforts, existing pharmaceutical supply chain systems in Indonesia lack the scalability and real-time tracking capabilities essential for ensuring product authenticity, including critical information such as expiration dates and dosage accuracy. This study addresses these deficiencies by developing a blockchain-based prototype designed to enhance security, traceability, and coordination across the pharmaceutical supply chain in Indonesia. Adopting a qualitative approach, this research combines a comprehensive literature review and in-depth interviews with key industry stakeholders to inform the prototype's design, thereby establishing a decentralized and tamper-resistant alternative to conventional systems. Preliminary findings indicate that the proposed blockchain model can substantially improve traceability, curtail the circulation of counterfeit products, and strengthen stakeholder confidence within Indonesia’s pharmaceutical sector. The study’s implications underscore blockchain’s potential as a transformative technology for pharmaceutical supply chain management, contributing to greater regulatory compliance and public health protection.
