Recent Advances in Microsponge Drug Delivery System: Patents and Future Prospects
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Introduction: The Microsponge Drug Delivery System (MDDS) is an advanced approach to targeted drug delivery that primarily employs biocompatible, biodegradable polymers. It is ideal for poorly soluble and unstable drugs that cause gastrointestinal irritation. The composition, preparation methods, applications, and prospects of MDDS are highlighted in this review. Methods: The primary goal of this review was to provide a concise overview of the MDDS through a comprehensive literature survey covering all its aspects. The information was collected through scholarly literature, including books, scientific reports, research articles, review papers, and patents. Each piece of information was critically reviewed, analysed, and summarized to understand the current status and future potential of MDDS. Results: The literature reveals that microsponges can accurately encapsulate a variety of drugs with improved stability and release control. Key methods for preparation, such as suspension polymerization and emulsion solvent diffusion, have led to significant progress in MDDS. The increasing number of patents and products revealed researchers’ interest and development in this field. Discussion: MDDS offers many advantages, including improved stability, controlled release, fewer side effects, and better patient compliance. Microsponges exhibit higher entrapment efficiency, strength, and drug loading than microspheres and liposomes. Scale-up and limited clinical use remain major challenges, but they excel in polymer science and nanotechnology. The research’s interest in patents compels the exploration of their potential for personalized and targeted deliveries. Conclusion: This review highlights the key aspects of the MDDS, including its formulation, advantages and disadvantages, evaluation, applications, marketed formulations, patents, recent advancements, and future prospects. MDDS offers a promising drug-delivery technology to address the limitations of conventional dosage forms. However, continued innovation, research, and development are inevitable to overcome current limitations and enable wider clinical application in the future.
