A compact UWB bandpass filter based on metamaterials for Sub-6 GHz 5 G and cmWave band 6 G wireless communications

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: A new UWB bandpass filter is designed using an innovative combination of double-coupled lines and two metamaterials (MMT) cells (SRRs) with exotic electromagnetic properties for utilization in 5G/6 G wireless networks. The designed filter offers an extended bandwidth, ranging from 2.8 GHz to 9.6 GHz, indicating a fractional bandwidth of 109.7 %. It also demonstrates a minimum insertion loss of 0.28 dB and is distinguished by its compact size of 0.08λ g ×0.84λ g, and is characterized by five transmission poles and two transmission zeros. It offers a group delay of 0.2 ns or less, reflecting remarkable phase linearity. The RT Duroid™ substrate (permittivity = 2.2 and thickness = 1.2 mm) is used to design the filter, ensuring its compatibility with the microwave S, C, and X frequency bands. In particular, the filter can operate entirely in the C-band, providing support for demanding applications such as the 5 G and 6 G networks. We propose an equivalent electrical circuit based on the Chebyshev response to model the filter, guaranteeing outstanding performance and applicability in various telecommunication scenarios. Furthermore, the proposed UWB-BPF represents a significant breakthrough in the application area of telecommunications, wireless communication, and electronic devices, offering outstanding performance, compact size, and application versatility that make it indispensable in a wide range of industrial contexts.
