Stress resultant shell modelling with torsional rigidity for woven textile forming simulation
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Implementing accurate and computationally efficient process models to predict forming outcomes can reduce the time and cost burden of the composites manufacturing process. A hypoelastic stress resultant shell model with torsional rigidity is developed to predict the anisotropic deformation of a woven textile. The shell section behaviour is derived from Classical Laminate Theory (CLT) and implemented in a VUGENS subroutine within the ABAQUS/Explicit numerical solver. The subroutine is validated against the analytical response of a single element subjected to prescribed traction loadings. The subroutine is then employed to predict the deformation of textile coupons in representative Cantilever Flexure (CF) and Picture Frame (PF) analyses. The VUGENS subroutine yields higher correlation with experiment than benchmark numerical frameworks implemented via VFABRIC and VUMAT subroutines. Simulations employing the VUGENS subroutine exhibit solve times at least 58 % lower than comparable benchmark numerical frameworks.
