China’s National Botanical Gardens: An innovative model to support global biodiversity conservation and sustainable development
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: • China is establishing a systematic National Botanical Garden (NBG) network, targeting the ex situ conservation of over 80% of nationally key protected wild plants and 70% of threatened species by 2035. • The NBGs implement a unique, synergistic five-dimensional framework integrating ex situ conservation, scientific research, resource utilization, public education, and horticultural display. • A deeply integrated management strategy aligns the NBGs with China’s National Parks, creating a robust two-pronged approach that combines ex situ and in situ conservation. • China’s NBGs actively contribute to global biodiversity targets by sharing conservation technologies and germplasm resources, particularly with developing countries through initiatives like the Belt and Road.
