Rock cuttability estimation via Cerchar scratch test

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: In this article, two rock cuttability parameters, scratching force and specific energy, were determined by means of the Cerchar scratch test, and then in comparison with widely accepted theoretical models of rock cutting. Moreover, a newly proposed parameter called modified scratching force, which is defined as the ratio of scratching force to the scratch depth, showed a good correlation with the theoretical models of rock cutting, and thus can be used to estimate the rock cuttability. In addition, regression analysis method was adopted to relate the cuttability parameters obtained from the Cerchar measurements to the rock mechanical properties. Results indicated that the uniaxial compressive strength shows a good correlation with modified scratching force and specific energy, respectively.
