Characterization of strain-induced anisotropy in isotropic hyperelastic materials via generalized incremental moduli

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Abastract This paper addresses the characterization of strain-induced anisotropy in isotropic hyperelastic materials through the concept of generalized incremental moduli. While linear elasticity provides a robust and well-established framework where material parameters have direct physical interpretations and straightforward experimental identification procedures, the field of hyperelasticity remains open and comparatively less explored, particularly due to the strain-dependent nature of mechanical properties. In this context, incremental stiffness moduli have previously been introduced to capture stiffness characteristics under specific deformation conditions such as uniaxial tension, simple shear, or hydrostatic pressure. Expanding upon this foundation, the present study applies generalized elasticity moduli capable of describing tangential stiffness under arbitrary deformation states, thus providing a powerful tool to analyze deformation-induced anisotropy. The paper provides detailed mathematical derivations for computing generalized incremental moduli, applying these formulations to classical and contemporary isotropic hyperelastic models, including Neo-Hookean, Mooney-Rivlin, Fung-Demiray, and Anssari-Benam formulations. The analytical results illustrate the evolution of anisotropic mechanical responses under various loading conditions, including uniaxial, equibiaxial, and simple shear states, demonstrating the suitability of the proposed approach for complex stress–strain conditions and its potential utility in both material characterization and engineering design.
