Comparison of the retention force of a zirconia crown according to the implant abutment configuration

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Purpose: This study evaluated the effect of structural differences in implant abutments, particularly taper and the presence of dimples, on the retention of zirconia crowns.Materials and Methods: Three types of prefabricated abutments with different tapers and the presence or absence of dimples were selected, with 10 specimens each, for a total of 30.All abutments had identical dimensions of 4.0 mm in diameter, 5.5 mm in height, and 3.0 mm cuff height, and were fixed in silicone molds fabricated with CAD design and 3D printing using acrylic resin.Zirconia copings were designed based on each system library with dimensions of 30 mm in diameter, 8 mm in height, and a 35 μm cement space, then milled and luted with temporary cement. The specimens were tested using a universal testing machine applying a tensile load at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min.Data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test, one-way ANOVA, and Tukey HSD.Results: Abutments with a 0° taper and dimples exhibited the highest retention, whereas no significant difference was found between abutments with 2.8° and 4° tapers (P < 0.001).Conclusion: The retention of zirconia crowns varied depending on abutment configuration.Abutments with a 0° taper and dimples demonstrated the highest retention, while no significant difference was observed between those with 2.8° and 4° tapers.(
