“If You Liked Vietnam, You’ll Love Angola”: The Black Panther Party, Afro-Asian Anti-Imperialisms, and Intercommunal Solidarity
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This paper revolves around the de rigueur claim in the mid-1970s that Angola was “the new Vietnam.” It does so through an analysis of a variety of sources, primarily the regular coverage offered of imperialist intervention in the south-west African country by the Black Panther Party in their newspaper, The Black Panther Intercommunal News Service . We trace a history of Afro-Asian print cultures to better situate the “intercommunalism” of The Black Panther as well as some of the particulars of political economy which made the anti-imperialist connection between Vietnam and Angola apparent to so many.
