Abstract: Fr. Karol Dębiński, a clergyman of the Lublin and later Podlasie dioceses, was a distinguished member of the local clergy at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. He was noted for his high intellectual and spiritual qualities, and served as a close collaborator of the bishop, a member of the chapter, and the administrator of the Lublin Cathedral. He demonstrated a deep understanding of both domestic and international church and social realities. Fr. Dębiński authored extensive memoirs, in which he presented, among other matters, the social landscape of four rural parishes where he served as a parish priest: Serniki, Włostowice, Janów Podlaski, and Biskupice. This unique type of source, valuable for its reliance on personal observation and evaluation, offers insights into significant aspects of rural life from the author’s perspective. Contrary to expectations, it lacks substantial descriptions of religious practices and folk traditions. Instead, it assesses levels of education and morality within individual parishes, as well as the living and farming conditions of the rural population. The author also discusses the varied nature of relationships between parishioners and the parish priest.
