Hybrid modulation strategy for minimizing backflow power under dual phase shift modulation

Type: article
Abstract: The dual active bridge (DAB) converter plays a pivotal role in DC microgrid applications due to its ability to provide galvanic isolation, enable high-power-density operation, and facilitate bidirectional power transfer. However, under voltage-mismatch conditions, single-phase-shift(SPS) modulation results in significant backflow power, which adversely impacts the converter's operational efficiency. Although KKT conditions-based optimization effectively minimizes backflow power, its direct application to dual-phase-shift (DPS) modulation creates power-vacancy region, limiting global optimization across the full power range. This paper proposes a novel DPS modulation strategy that: establishes an intuitive two-dimensional power-transfer plot under DPS modulation, andselects optimal operational paths in power-vacancy region.Experimental results demonstrate that under light-load conditions, the proposed minimum-backflow-power hybrid modulation strategy achieves remarkable reductions in backflow power compared to SPS and traditional DPS (TDPS) methods. The strategy completely eliminates power-vacancy region, enabling comprehensive backflow optimization across the entire power range.
