Abstract: This article discusses Husserl’s conception of the interplay of science, history, and language in his essay The Origin of Geometry against the background of Derrida’s famous introduction to its French translation, which explicates the intrinsic relation between history, science, and writing. More precisely, we discuss why and how history and in particular a history of geometry is a challenge to Husserl’s phenomenology in light of Derrida’s suggestion of ‘complete conflagration’ and the possibility of the destruction and complete loss of truth it implies. In particular, we inquire into Husserl’s conception and usage of the history of philosophy, the meaning of handing down and the sense of science as a tradition.
