Cutimed Sorbion Sachet S and relevant foam dressings for venous leg ulcers: a cost comparison in the UK and Austria
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Venous leg ulcers are chronic wounds that can affect patients’ quality of life considerably. Effective exudate management can positively impact quality of life and reduce the economic and human burden of venous leg ulcers. Therefore, access to suitable wound dressings can save time and reduce healthcare costs. This article compares a hydration response technology dressing – Cutimed Sorbion Sachet S – with commonly used foam dressings, focusing on potential reductions in costs and time spent on dressing changes in the UK and Austria. Allevyn Gentle, Biatain Non‑Adhesive, Biatain Silicone Non‑Border, Mepilex, Mepilex XT and Mepilex Up were compared with Cutimed Sorbion Sachet S. Data on costs and time spent on dressing changes by nurses were obtained from country‑specific databases and published literature. Base case analyses estimated potential cost savings per 100 patients per month that could be achieved by switching from foam dressings to Cutimed Sorbion Sachet S ranged from £800–£1170 in the UK and €2370–€3058 in Austria. The overall price difference ranged from 33–52%. Sensitivity analyses confirmed the base case analyses and indicated that use of Cutimed Sorbion Sachet S could potentially reduce the number of nursing visits required for dressing changes. This could potentially reduce the pressure on nursing staff and free up time and resources for other activities in the healthcare system.
