Abstract: WKS 38: “Developing Ethically Sustainable Research Practices with Minorities: The Case of Sámi and Roma in Finland”, B308 (FCSH), September 5, 2025, 09:00 - 10:00 Background and Objectives Ethical research guidelines in universities and institutions often fail to fully recognize minority voices, particularly in fields like health and well-being. This workshop explores co-creation between researchers and ethnic minorities, using Finland’s Indigenous Sámi and the Roma, Europe’s largest minority, as case studies. Participants will engage with models and approaches for ethically sustainable research and knowledge production. Through interactive discussions, we will examine ways to ensure that minority perspectives are not only included but meaningfully integrated into research practices, fostering more inclusive and equitable knowledge systems. Workshop Plan This 60-minute workshop begins with a 25-minute introduction to ethical research guidelines for the Sámi and Roma, using Finland as a case study. Participants will explore key principles of ethically sustainable research and discuss challenges in minority-inclusive knowledge production. Following the introduction, participants will have 10 minutes to reflect on their own research contexts and challenges. In the next 20 minutes, attendees will engage in a facilitated discussion, sharing insights and brainstorming strategies for implementing inclusive research practices in diverse settings. The final 5 minutes will be dedicated to summarizing key takeaways and closing remarks. This interactive session encourages critical reflection, collaborative learning, and the development of concrete strategies to make research more inclusive and ethical. Main Messages 1. Minority voices and knowledge production must be actively recognized and integrated into research, particularly in health and well-being. 2. There are established models and practices that support ethically sustainable research with ethnic and cultural minorities. Researchers must critically engage with ethical frameworks to create more inclusive, cocreated research methodologie
