An integrated framework for rooftop solar viability assessment: Enhancing building reuse and urban sustainability through UAV-Derived 3D modeling and performance simulation
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This paper presents an integrated framework for evaluating rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) potential using UAV-derived 3D modeling, solar radiation simulations, future climate projections, and economic analysis. High-resolution aerial imagery captured by a DJI Mavic 3 PRO is processed via photogrammetry to generate centimeter-accurate roof meshes, which are imported into Rhino and Grasshopper for irradiance and energy simulations using Ladybug Tools. Future weather scenarios are modeled to assess long-term PV performance. A case study of the historic Masonic Temple in Binghamton, NY estimates an annual output of 96,000 kWh for an 84 kW system, with a 5.8-year payback period. In comparative trials with ten architecture students, the UAV-based workflow reduced geometry preparation time by over 75%, improved measurement accuracy, and cut simulation runtime by 71%, while avoiding common modeling errors. This method supports efficient, accessible PV feasibility assessments using widely available tools.
