Abstract: Background: Thrombocytopenia and anemia are common in the setting of congenital cardiac disease (CHD). Depending on the lesion, 20-48% of patients with cyanotic congenital heart disease may have some degree of thrombocytopenia that inversely correlates with hemoglobin postulated to be due to the degree of hypoxemia and cyanosis. Because the thrombocytopenia may be associated with degree of right-to-left shunting, decreases in platelet counts may also portend worsening prognosis. We had noted a cohort of patients with congenital heart disease with severe thrombocytopenia, or hemolytic anemia, or both that appeared to be immune mediated rather than related specifically to underlying cardiac physiology.
