Next-Generation Liposomes for Cosmeceutical Applications: From Structural Insights to Smart, Sustainable Delivery and Clinical Outcomes

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Liposomes have emerged as leading nanocarriers in modern cosmeceuticals, bridging the gap between beauty and biotechnology. Their biocompatible, bilayered structure enables the encapsulation of both hydrophilic and lipophilic ingredients, enhancing stability, penetration, and controlled release of active agents. Through their intimate interaction with the stratum corneum, liposomes improve skin hydration, elasticity, and the bioavailability of bioactives, making them ideal for anti-aging, whitening, and photoprotective formulations. The growing demand for innovative and sustainable skincare technologies has sparked significant interest in lipid-based nanocarriers due to their safety, versatility, and ability to mimic biological membranes. However, despite these advantages, conventional liposomal systems face challenges such as oxidation, drug leakage, and size instability, which can compromise their cosmetic performance and shelf life. Recent advances, including polymer-coated, lyophilized, and hybrid liposomes, have successfully improved their structural integrity and long-term stability. Moreover, the integration of artificial intelligence in formulation design and the adoption of green production technologies are paving the way for smarter, eco-friendly cosmetic solutions. This review highlights the structure, mechanisms, applications, and evolving innovations of liposomes in cosmetics, emphasizing their pivotal role in the next generation of sustainable, high-performance skin delivery systems.
