A chitosan-based aerogel with radially aligned structure for cushioning and antimicrobial packaging of fruits

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Cushioning materials paly a critical role in protecting delicate fruits against mechanical stress during postharvest handling. To minimize spoilage, these materials must combine impact absorption with antimicrobial functionality. OBJECTIVES: The study developed chitosan-based aerogels with integrated cushioning, antimicrobial and biodegradable properties for fruit packaging. METHODS: A composite aerogel was fabricated by crosslinking chitosan (CS) with ε-polylysine functionalized carboxylated cellulose nanofiber (CCNF-PL) via radial freeze-drying. The structural and mechanical properties of aerogel with varying CS/CCNF-PL ratios were analyzed. The antimicrobial efficacy and biodegradability were thoroughly investigated. Additionally, a simulated transportation assay was conducted to assess the aerogel's protective performance on blueberries. RESULTS: The radially structured CS/CCNF-PL aerogel exhibited ultra-low density, high compressibility, and excellent shape recovery. It demonstrated complete inhibition (100 %) against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Botrytis cinerea. Applied in blueberry packaging, the aerogel significantly reduced mechanical damage compared to conventional polyethylene foam. Furthermore, complete biodegradation in soil was achieved within 21 days. CONCLUSION: This work presents a sustainable and multifunctional aerogel material with significant potential for perishable fruit packaging applications, combining mechanical protection, antimicrobial activity, and environmental friendliness.
