Assessment of community sustainability on social forestry program implementation in Indonesia: Insights from agroforestry model in Java and Sumatra
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The Indonesia Social Forestry (SF) program has been implemented in different schemes and locations, and assessment is essential to evaluate the successful management of the program. This study aimed to compare the implementation of the SF program in Java and Sumatra through the SF program's assessment of sustainability at the community level. This study was conducted in six communities that implemented different schemes of the SF program. Twenty indicators (verifiers) are grouped into institutional, governance, and outcome aspects and were used to calculate the sustainability index of communities. This study found that Java communities are more sustainable than Sumatra's, as shown by their higher overall sustainability index (OSI). The communities in Java are more substantial in most institutional setting and governance indicators and obtain more socio-economic benefits from the SF program. The age of the communities' institutions and the improvement of the SF product's value may indicate the higher organizational governance maturity and entrepreneurship of the communities
