Investigating the impact of augmented reality in machine operation training: A case study on laser-cutting machines
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Although augmented reality (AR) has shown promising effects in education, its application in manufacturing training remains underexplored, particularly beyond assembly and maintenance tasks. This study examines the impact of AR on learning machine operation using a laser-cutting machine as a case study. The initial hypothesis that AR enhances performance and the learning experience was not fully supported by this experiment. The inexperienced learners who used AR produced fewer errors than instructor-led learners when reproducing the cutting task, but the control group performed faster than the AR group. The experiment also revealed a significant difference in the amount of additional information needed by both groups. These findings highlight the importance of design and challenge the notion that AR consistently enhances learning. However, these results offer valuable insights for future AR-based training system designs, emphasising the need for more nuanced approaches to optimise AR's educational efficacy.
