Numerical evaluation of fibre anchor configurations in cfrp-strengthened concrete beams

Abstract: This study presents a detailed numerical investigation into the flexural performance of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with CFRP and anchored using splay-type fibre systems. These systems are widely used in bridge and marine rehabilitation due to their durability and ease of installation. Finite element models were developed using ABAQUS. The modelling approach features a high level of sophistication, capturing the interaction between fibre anchors, CFRP, and reinforced concrete. It was calibrated using full-scale test data and achieved over 95% accuracy in predicting peak load. It accurately captured load-deflection response and failure modes, ensuring reliability for the parametric study. The parametric analysis included both T-section and rectangular-section beams. It examined the effects of anchor embedment depth, anchor spacing, and anchor layout. In T-beams, an embedment depth of 100 mm prevented pull-out failure and produced shear failure in the anchors. At this depth, CFRP rupture replaced debonding, showing full tensile mobilisation. An anchor spacing of 140 mm was optimal. Wider spacing caused premature CFRP debonding. End anchors within 16% of the shear span contributed negligibly, defining a non-effective anchorage zone. In rectangular beams, capacity plateaued despite increased embedment depth due to early concrete crushing, demonstrating limited tensile mobilisation.Findings show that beam geometry governs anchor behaviour. T-beams responded to embedment and spacing, enabling full CFRP engagement, while rectangular beams were limited by compressive failure. A non-effective anchorage zone was identified, supporting efficient anchor distribution. These insights enhance strengthening strategies and improve the reliability and economy of anchored CFRP system design.
