A solid-beam approach for mesoscopic analysis of textile reinforcements

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: In composite design and manufacturing process, numerical mesoscopic analysis aims to offer accurate tools to predict fiber volume fraction, gaps, fiber disorientation and other defect or geometrical characteristic that could influence mechanical properties or permeability of the fibrous media. This work proposes a new approach for the mesoscopic analysis of textiles, based on a fibrous solid-beam finite element and a transversely isotropic hyperelastic constitutive model adapted from previous work. The element is designed to simulate fiber yarns in textiles, and is based on the superposition of a solid element and virtual beams that take into account the bending behavior of fibrous materials. The element’s potential is illustrated through numerical simulations on a single yarn, and the role of the material parameters is discussed in detail.
