Short Communication: Biomass-dependent allomorphs in nanocellulose: Direct CII isolation from softwood and hibiscus
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Previous studies by the authors have demonstrated allomorph mixing during the isolation of nanocellulose under common pretreatment and strong acid hydrolysis methods reported in the literature. Specifically, the research indicated that the resulting nanocellulose structure varies depending on the type of chemical treatment conditions, often showing a mixture of cellulose allomorphs, particularly cellulose-I (CI) and cellulose-III (CIII). Other authors have also noted the coexistence of different allomorphs in chemically treated and regenerated cellulose films. The current work presents new findings that suggest a deviation from the typical CI allomorph can be initiated depending on the biomass source. This brief communication reinforces earlier literature reported observations by providing clear evidence that nanocellulose derived from softwood and Hibiscus adopts a CII allomorph when subjected to identical pretreatment and strong acid hydrolysis isolation conditions.
