The Rise, Persistence, and Decline of Global Communist Movements: A Marxist Theoretical and Historical Analysis

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study examines the conditions, processes, and determinants of the existence, decline, and dissolution of communist movements through an integrated Marxist-theoretical and historical framework. Drawing on the works of Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin, and Mao, as well as modern Marxist scholarship, the study argues that communist cessation is a multidimensional phenomenon shaped by ideological decay, ethical deterioration, organizational weaknesses, mass-base erosion, and failures of historical-material adaptation. The research demonstrates that theoretical clarity—rooted in scientific socialism and class struggle—is foundational for the survival of communist movements. When parties drift toward ideological ambiguity or revisionism, their revolutionary purpose weakens. Ethical lapses, including corruption, privilege-seeking, and bureaucratic expansion, further erode the moral legitimacy of leadership. Organizational instability, factionalism, and opportunism within party structures disrupt proletarian unity and diminish revolutionary efficacy. Additionally, the weakening of the mass base, loss of proletarian engagement, and the abandonment of continuous revolutionary practice accelerate decline. Historical-material factors—such as technological changes, global capitalist pressures, and internal economic crises—create structural conditions that can undermine socialist transformation if inadequately addressed. The study uses the collapse of the Soviet Union as a key historical illustration, showing how ideological drift, economic inefficiency, leadership crises, and rising nationalisms interactively produced systemic dissolution. Synthesizing classical theory with historical evidence, the study concludes that communist cessation occurs not from a single cause but through the cumulative erosion of interdependent dimensions of theory, ethics, organization, mass politics, and material conditions. These findings offer a holistic analytical framework for examining contemporary communist movements and their vulnerabilities in changing global contexts.
