Ayurvedic Treatment Protocol to Manage Delusional Disorder: Jealousy Type (~Unmada) – A Case Study
Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Case Report
Abstract: Export Introduction: Delusional disorder is a psychiatric condition characterized by having at least 1 month of bizarre delusions without other psychotic symptoms. In the jealousy subtype of delusional disorder, the patient experiences consistent suspicion over one’s spouse or partner. This delusion of infidelity causes significant problems in the patient’s marital life which can lead to frequent anger outbursts, disputes, physical violence, and divorce. Various pharmacotherapies are used for management, but long-time administration and adverse drug reactions make them debatable. This condition can be correlated with Unmada (~Insanity) in Ayurveda. Main Clinical Finding: In this case report, a 48-year-old male patient presented with complaints of continuous doubt over his wife along with anger outbursts, agitation, stress, and insomnia for 3 months. Diagnosis: The patient was diagnosed with a jealousy subtype of delusional disorder, and assessment was done with a Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale. Interventions: Treatment was started with Shamana Snehapana (~oral administration of unctuous substances for pacification) by Kalyanaka Ghrita along with other treatments mentioned in Unmada Chikitsa (~treatment) in Samhitas. Outcome: Noticeable emotional and behavioral improvement was seen during discharge and follow-up. Conclusions: Hence, this protocol can help to treat such conditions with minimal side effects.
