Abstract: The Blue Economy is a sustainable approach that focuses on harnessing ocean resources to promote economic growth, generate employment opportunities, and enhance human well-being, while simultaneously preserving marine ecosystems. Unlike conventional economic models that often prioritize short-term gains, the Blue Economy emphasizes long-term sustainability, recognizing that the health of the oceans is essential for global prosperity. Oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface and provide a wide range of critical ecosystem services. They are a major source of food, supplying protein to billions of people through fisheries and aquaculture. They contribute to energy production via renewable sources such as offshore wind, tidal, and wave energy. Oceans also play a crucial role in global trade and transportation, serving as major shipping routes, and in climate regulation, by absorbing significant amounts of carbon dioxide and heat. Furthermore, marine ecosystems like coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds support biodiversity, maintain ecological balance, and provide natural protection to coastal communities. 1 Despite these essential functions, oceans face serious threats from human activities. Overfishing reduces fish populations, disrupts marine food chains, and threatens livelihoods dependent on fishing. Pollution including plastics, chemicals, and untreated sewage contaminates water and marine life, eventually affecting human health. Coastal development and urbanization lead to habitat destruction, while deep-sea mining and other industrial activities pose new risks to fragile ecosystems. Climate change adds further pressure, causing ocean warming, acidification, and sea-level rise, which impact marine biodiversity and coastal populations. In response to these challenges, the Blue Economy provides a framework for sustainable ocean management, ensuring that economic activities such as fisheries, shipping, tourism, and energy production are conducted in ways that do not compromise the health of marine ecosystems. Through integrated planning, technological monitoring, and effective policy implementation, the Blue Economy seeks to balance economic development with conservation, safeguarding the oceans for current and future generations while supporting human livelihoods and global economic growth.
