Regional differences and dynamic evolution of the modernization level of China’s fishery industry chain

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: : The modernization of the fishery industry chain acts as the core underpinning for propelling the high-quality development of fisheries. However, the existing fishery chain faces multiple key bottlenecks, which restrict its modernization process. This study develops an evaluation index system covering four dimensions: foundation, resilience, synergy, and sustainability. By selecting panel data spanning 2016–2023 from 27 provincial regions in China, the overall modernization level and the development status of each dimension are measured using the entropy method. The study also comprehensively employs methods such as Dagum Gini coefficient decomposition, local Moran's I, kernel density estimation, and spatial Markov chain to deeply analyze the sources of regional differences, spatial correlation characteristics, and spatiotemporal dynamic evolution mechanisms. The findings show that: (1) At the national level, the modernization level of the fishery industry chain shows an overall upturn; (2) The overall regional differences show a narrowing trend, regional disparities constitute its primary source;(3) The modernization level of the fishery industry chain demonstrates a pronounced positive spatial clustering propensity feature; (4) The modernization level of the fishery industry chain shows a step-by-step distribution of "eastern > central > western"; (5) The possibility of state transition of the modernization level of the fishery industry chain is small, and high-level regions exert positive spatial spillover impact on neighboring medium and low-level regions. This study provides important references for identifying the regional weaknesses of the modernization level of China's fishery industry chain and promoting coordinated development.
