Energy Harvesting Devices for Extending the Lifespan of Lithium-Polymer Batteries: Insights for Electric Vehicles
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study examines the feasibility of incorporating energy harvesting devices into electric vehicles while highlighting their potential to extend battery lifespan. For this purpose, a simulation setup of a real-life scenario was designed and implemented. This setup includes a small-scale electric vehicle powered by a 12.6-volt lithium polymer battery installed on an automated control platform. The platform continuously monitored the current, voltage, and temperature of the battery to enable real-time estimation of its state of charge. Three driving profiles were used in the study to demonstrate their influence on energy demand patterns. Driving Profile A maintained a steady speed of 30 km/h. Driving Profile B used varying speeds based on a sawtooth signal. Profile B used random speeds. The results show that while supplemental energy from energy harvesters is useful for powering accessory systems in electric vehicles, it is insufficient for powering main systems. Nevertheless, it can extend the battery lifespan. These findings contribute to the development of environmentally friendly energy management plans for electric vehicles. This study underscores the importance of sustainable mobility systems in reducing the ecological footprint of transportation.
