Supporting trauma and addictions recovery: Applying seeking safety at Soonats’ooneh Community Health Centre
Year: 2025
Type: dissertation
Abstract: My practicum placement took place at Soonats'ooneh Community Health Centre (formerly Central Interior Native Health Society), a primary care clinic in Prince George, British Columbia that provides health care services for Indigenous individuals who may experience barriers accessing conventional health facilities. There are limited treatment options for addictions and trauma in northern British Columbia, creating gaps in services for people seeking support. My practicum objective was to develop competency in clinical social work skills with a focus on group facilitation and individual counselling to provide trauma-informed options for healing from trauma and addictions. This report outlines the implementation of individual counselling skills and psychoeducational group sessions using the Seeking Safety modality, which is a present-focused, evidence-based treatment model for trauma and addictions focused on coping skill development and creating safety. The learning opportunities I had during my practicum shaped my ongoing commitments to my future learning as a professional social worker and to my future clients.,
