Food-grade extraction and capsule formulation of genistein-rich soybean extract for nutraceutical applications
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The nutraceutical industry faces critical barriers because conventional genistein extraction methods employ toxic solvents, limiting commercial scalability and regulatory compliance. This study establishes a food-grade extraction paradigm using GRAS-compliant solvents to address fundamental safety and regulatory limitations. Through pH-dependent optimization, 5 N acetic acid achieved superior genistein recovery (75.32 mg/100 g soybean) while maintaining good extract quality. Powder manufacturing using pharmaceutical-grade talcum converted viscous extracts into free-flowing powders with optimal flow properties (e.g., angle of repose: 30.0°, compressibility index: 19.5%). The formulated capsules rapidly disintegrated (≤4 minutes), surpassing the pharmacopeial standards, confirming their commercial feasibility. This methodology represents an alternative approach that results in a 15% greater yield than conventional methods do and offers scalable, environmentally sustainable, and regulatory-compliant alternatives that address critical industry needs for safe genistein-based nutraceuticals, providing significant advantages over conventional toxic solvent systems.
