Fragmenta Britannica VI. Some epigraphic aspects of East Greek pottery from Naukratis

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: ABSTRACT The study of pottery from the East Greek world in the Archaic period has seen substantial progress in the (long) last generation, thanks in part to the publication of some of the recently excavated material in the home lands but especially from the contribution of clay analysis. The picture of massive pottery production on Rhodes has been completely transformed and the output of workshops in Kos, Knidos, Miletus, Klazomenai, Teos, Smyrna and Aeolis becoming clearer.1 This contribution involves such work in the context of some new observations of sherds from Naukratis, most in the British Museum, and the input of their epigraphic evidence, notably with respect to provenance and the mutual contribution of decoration and text to the restoration of the pots.2
