The Urdu short story (Afsanje) has addressed issues of humanity and society with a high degree of condensation and immediacy, presenting them in the form of intensive flashes. The short story has successfully presented and concentrated these issues in the reader's mind without resorting to lengthy narration; a short story consisting of a single line can potentially present a problem that could be analyzed over pages. Consequently, despite its brevity, it has managed to encompass diverse and varied issues simultaneously. Its simple words included intellectual issues that occupy a significant space in human concerns, such as time, death, and the impact of technological development on human thought. It also contained psychological issues that stir and dominate the human soul, such as feelings of loneliness and inner conflict (self-struggle). Furthermore, it included social issues, some of which are local to the Indian and Pakistani communities, and others of a global nature, such as violence against girls, terrorism, the paradox of conflict and peaceful coexistence, and begging, among others. To illuminate these issues, Urdu writers employed various short story techniques, including symbolism, condensation, irony (paradox), deviation (displacement), intertextuality, satire, and personification (embodiment). This ensures the message reaches the reader instantly, concluding with an awe that prompts their mind toward deep thought and analysis without boredom or distraction.
