Abstract: This study investigated the status of music education at the pre school level as reported by preschool directors and administrators in selected licensed Ohio day care centers. Specifically, a survey ques tionnaire was developed for the purpose of gathering data concern ing the availability, frequency, classification, and purpose of music-related activities in the preschools. The questionnaire con sisted of 19 multiple choice questions and was accompanied by a child day care center profile form. The sample group consisted of 880 Ohio preschools selected randomly from 2,376 part-time and fulltime day care centers. Of those surveyed, 500 responded. The results indicated that music is presented at the preschool level and that children are experiencing music in a variety of ways. Addition ally, it is the classroom teacher who largely is responsible for con ducting the music activities, determining the frequency of music involvement, designing and organizing music activities, and offer ing music instruction in the regular classroom.
