Deixis in Discourse. Reichenbach on Temporal Reference

Year: 2013
Type: book-chapter
Abstract: The present chapter attempts to apply the of symbolic logic to an analysis of conversational language. Unlike the other sections this one does not make any use of the symbolic tools provided by formal logic; if it is to be counted as an application of the methods of symbolic logic, then only in the attenuated sense that what it has to say is evidently the product of a logical mind - the kind that it would be nice to think training in formal logic could create or improve. On the contrary, one might rather be inclined to think that what is so remarkable about this section is that Reichenbach's knowledge of symbolic logic as it then existed did not deflect him from insights which are so clearly at loggerheads with the then prevalent notions of how logic could and ought to be applied. Keywords:conversational language; Reichenbach's knowledge; symbolic logic
