Abstract: A novel system for the recognition of head movement \ngestures used to convey non-manual information in \nsign language is presented. We propose a framework for \nrecognizing a set of head movement gestures and identifying \nhead movements outside of this set. Experiments show our \nproposed system is capable of classifying three different head \nmovement gestures and identifying 15 other head movements as \nmovements which are outside of the training set. In this paper \nwe perform experiments to investigate the best feature vectors \nfor discriminating between positive a negative head movement \ngestures and a ROC analysis of the systems classifications \nperformance showed an area under the curve measurement \nof 0:936 for the best performing feature vector.
