Interview with Steve McCarty
Year: 2024
Type: editorial
Abstract: The College and University Educators research group of the Japan Association for Language Teaching interviews Steve McCarty on his professorial accomplishments in Japan. His summation of how foreign language teaching in Japan took a wrong turn around the 1990s provokes the conscience of the profession. He also discusses future trends of increasing foreigners in Japan, the need for English, and long-term effects of AI on language acquisition. The article starts with his part-time teaching in the U.S. and studying Japanese in graduate school in 1979. It concludes with his commitment to international faculty development and representing Japan in the Digital Education and Skills working group of the EU-funded Indo-Pacific European Hub for Digital Partnerships (with Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and India) until 2027.
