Acquisition of auxiliary selection in French and Italian and the role of input

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This study focuses on child acquisition of perfective auxiliaries in French and Italian by analysing auxiliary productions in naturalistic corpora from CHILDES (N = 18 for French, N = 9 for Italian) and considering the role of input. We analyse auxiliary productions for be-selecting intransitives, have-selecting intransitives and reflexives in both languages, looking at child speech and parental speech as a representation of input. This considers different error types (3sg extensions of be vs. true auxiliary selection errors).
