The Digital Dark Side: IoT Cybersecurity Threats

Year: 2025
Type: preprint
Abstract: The rapid proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices has revolutionized various industries, enhancing connectivity and convenience in both personal and professional environments. However, this growth has also introduced significant cybersecurity challenges, as IoT devices often lack robust security measures, making them prime targets for malicious attacks. This paper examines the key cybersecurity threats associated with IoT devices, including common vulnerabilities, such as weak authentication, inadequate encryption, and insecure interfaces. Through a detailed analysis of various attack vectors, including Distributed Denial of Service (DdoS) attacks, man-in-the-middle attacks, and botnet creation, this study highlights the potential risks posed to individuals, businesses, and society at large. Additionally, the paper evaluates existing security protocols and their limitations, offering insights into current defensive strategies. The findings emphasize the need for improved security standards, advanced encryption techniques, and the integration of machine learning for real-time threat detection. The paper concludes with recommendations for strengthening IoT device security, underscoring the critical importance of proactive measures to safeguard against emerging threats in an increasingly interconnected world.
