Abstract: Written with the Jundiaí Historical Archive (AHMJ, in its original acronym), this brief analysis focuses on colonial administration in Jundiaí, a Portuguese-colonised village in the countryside of São Paulo in the 17th century, as examined from a manuscript entitled Deeds of land cession (1657-1889). This manuscript contains 60 documents on land cession, concentration and ownership. Even though these deeds lack notarial certification, this study aims to demonstrate that other sources must be incorporated in any research involving those deeds, as it also sheds some light on document analysis by scrutinising elements such as rubrics, certified copies, handwriting models, ink and watermark as a way to allow proper dating and prevent further scientific misconceptions.
