II.11 — Survey and alignment of accelerators

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The present chapter summarizes the survey and alignment processes of accelerators and transfer lines. The major geodetic principles governing the survey and alignment measurement space are revisited and their relationship to a lattice coordinate system shown. The chapter continues with a broad overview about the activities involved in the step by step sequence from the initial discussions on alignment strategy to final smoothing. Emphasis is given to the relative alignment of components and the corresponding instrumentation and method. The R&D for the alignment of future accelerators is also introduced. This chapter also aims at considering the benefits of integrating geodetic metrology in the design of new particle physics facilities as early as possible.
